The concert was recorded in Japan (obviously) and I did all the rest of the stuff. That comprised one guitar patchup (on a song where Glenn had broken a string and was forced to change gtrs mid song) - so we fixed that hole.
Also, Rob had lost his voice on the original recording - he had a case of laryngitis, which couldn't have been avoided. So we had a tough decision to make - either mix the album with a vocal that was frankly awful due to the throat condition, or fix it. So, as the tracks were killer, we chose to do an alternate lead vocal track and see how it turned out. I set Rob up in the living room (this was at Ringo Starr's mansion studio) with a chair as his "wedge monitor" , gave him a handheld Shure 57 or 58 (I can't remember which) and rolled tape. Prior to starting Rob had said " I don't want to do any punch ins ok? I just want to do it all in one go". That was fine with us, so once we rolled tape he was off and running. The only time we stopped was when I changed the reels of tape (there were 3 or 4 reels) and he sang through each reel in one take.
So, while it IS true that we patched up the show, it was really minimal in the sense that we didn't actually ADD anything that wasn't done live, which often happens on live albums. Both the guitar and vocal fixing patched up unusable elements on the original. I'm really happy we did do the patching as the whole thing is just killer. It would have been a shame to have to throw the recordings out due to Rob's voice being temporarily out of action.
So, once the vocals were sorted my good friend Tom and I spent a few days mixing it. The rest is history. Hope this helps.
