I'm really curious to hear how SKELATOR managed to capture the magic of Elric's story.
Haha, yeah, of course it's similar to the great piece by Michael Whelan, used on "Frost And Fire"!
We have been so lucky that the artist who painted it (Maichol Quinto) got back to us right away and that the artwork was available for licensing! When the deadline was upon the band to deliver the stuff needed for the album, they told us that the artist whom they had commissioned for the cover art had disappeared (and I have to add now: luckily, because he was just OK, not outstanding). So we had to search feverishly on the internet for images of Elric and found a few on Deviant Art - we had some choice, but I immediately fell in love with this beautiful piece.
What's interesting, it had not been used in print before - this (Italian) artist painted it as a personal gift for Michael Moorcock! Not surprisingly, the artist is also a metalhead
Il mio piccolo Elric, la mia passione regalata al Maestro Michael Moorcock, un'emozione indimenticabile. Grazie Sir. The Evocation of AriochYou can check his other art at:
